PINK test tape

Edit and play by filmmaker Sophie Newton featuring Rosa Firbank as PINK.

This footage was created in August 2020 before the full movement research for PINK had been completed, so it’s not a completely accurate version but instead demonstrates how a three part structure would represent three emotive moods from a single colour.

Including original music by Gal Cohen.

RED

RED is: Lost in thought, Calmly shellshocked.
Feelings of lucid surrender with impulses of conscious control.

A place others may panic, I have comfort and leadership through storms while placid in the sunset.
Breathless hanging into motions of surrender contracted with a strength in stillness that keeps a feeling of control.

Even when I shut my eyes with the light in my face RED is what is there, a hot day, the pulse of heat as I move makes me feel the colour more intensely.
Josh Scott, RED Movement Artist

The three videos below show Josh exploring everything RED in movement.

yellow

YELLOW is light. a lot of light and a lack of light.
Sunny light and artificial light.
It can give us a feeling of a beginning and an end of a cycle, like the day or a ritual,
Maybe YELLOW is like the gemini personality, it can switch immediately without any preparation.

Energetic - Positive - The best version of myself.
Sivan Rubinstein, YELLOW Movement Artist

The three videos below show Sivan exploring everything YELLOW in movement.

GREEN

Serious & intense
Activist - the artificial green, manmade, signalling, telling you to listen and do something now. Youth.
Mother Nature - guides you, carries you and guides you on your journey. Wisdom.

Jessica Haener, GREEN Movement Artist

The three videos below show Jessica exploring everything GREEN in movement.

PINK

Pink in our bodies: Grotesque - Explicit - Hidden - Gooey - Wet - Textured - Ugly - Caves - Raw - Touches of red - Internal - Injury - bringing blood to the surface - Sunburn - Embarrassment - Fingertips - Lips - Vaginas - Throats - Scabs - Fresh skin - Tongues - Blood - Gums - Scars - Nipples

Rosa Firbank, PINK MovementArtist

The three videos below show Rosa exploring everything PINK in movement.

ORANGE

Orange is the central chakra, space where creation takes place, creative energy.
Earthy, passionate, thick, lower centres, raw, RAWRR, edgy, magnificent, super social, super cool, can be too high energy.

Happiness with who I am and where I am.

Akeim Toussaint Buck, ORANGE Movement Artist

The three videos below show Akeim exploring everything ORANGE in movement.

PURPLE

Mystical - reach towards - Really rich colour - Regal - Wealth and class - Uncommonly used - Psychedelic - once developed more, not so much - Surreal
Not a stressful colour - takes you somewhere - calming - floaty - drugs that take you down, zen you out not speed you up

Tempting and curious.

Gordon Raeburn, PURPLE Movement Artist

The three videos below show Gordon exploring everything PURPLE in movement.

BLUE

Expanse of blue - you cannot get away from blue - No matter where you are in the world (outside) you can see the sky - Element of perspective - Memory of lying on the floor looking up at the sky and the clouds moving which lead to expansive but unreachable - Depth in blue - Most at home and most settled in/with blue - You can get swept away in blue - You can find yourself in it - Ever changing - Spectrum of blue

Unreachable and ever present.

Harriet Parker-Beldeau, BLUE Movement Artist

The three videos below show Harriet exploring everything BLUE in movement.

MORE TESTING

Test tape from very early stages of research, edited by filmmaker Sophie Newton and featuring myself, Jessica Miller, exploring the seven colours in movement.
Together, once restrictions eased, Sophie and I edited the footage to explore working in portrait and how different colours worked in contrast to each other.

Colour is always half the story

How fast does it come?
How much of it do you see?

Trickling in and out,
the journey of colour

We are playing with memory, light and shade. The dark and the light moments of memories.
“Film is like a poem, there is a narrative even if there are no words.”

Brooke Mead

JOV_Brook_Mead.jpg

Pre-Covid 19 I was able to lead a colour workshop with residents at the Brooke Mead centre who have early-mid stage dementia. This was facilitated by Luan Taylor, Creative Communities Manager for South East Dance’s Welcome Project. Together we talked, danced and played with colourful fabric, discussing favourite colours and memories, followed by tea and cake.

It was a magical experience for all, and we had a real sense of escapism which I felt really passionate to recreate. I got in touch with digital illustrator Jovilee Burton, to create a world that felt true to where we travelled in our minds that day. I was able to explain the experience to her with a little bit about the residents and what emotions and memories arose for them. From this she created a surrealistic world which you can see in the image to the left and in full below.

Here’s what she shared on her inspiration for the piece:

”My inspiration all started on how the elders felt. It means a lot for them to have others take their time out to visit & interact. Not only to talk but also listen. This I can only imagine for them to feel like they are mentally transported into a world were they remember wonderful memories hence the surrealistic environment. I also did not want to place them in an elderly home as I felt the emotions didn’t reflect the environment.”
